Discover swahili Heritage

Lamu Old Town is considered to be one of best preserved Swahili settlements in Eastern Africa. The town dates back to at least the late 14th century when the Pwani Mosque was built. Most buildings date from the 18th century, but the lower parts and basements are often considerably older. The streets are narrow, cool and quiet and there are many small barazas and intimate spaces enclosed by tall coral walls.

Since the mosques have no minarets, little outward decoration and few doors and windows opening onto the street they are often hard to distinguish from domestic buildings. One of the most outstanding features of the houses here, as in old Zanzibar, is the intricately carved doors and lintels which have kept generations of carpenters busy. Although some of these treasures have disappeared, efforts to protect them have increased since the late 1980s, helping to keep this important heritage alive.

Today, Lamu showcases a vibrant arts and crafts scene, featuring exquisite carpentry such as carved chairs, beds, and doors, along with fine examples of ironwork, silver, and gold jewellery. The art of traditional dhow building thrives in Matandoni, adding to Lamu's cultural tapestry.
